The fertile window spans approximately 6 days, the 5 days before ovulation plus the day of ovulation itself. EWCM appears within this window, making its presence a signal that you’re approaching or at peak fertility. For women with shorter or longer cycles, this window shifts accordingly, which is why tracking your actual LH surge gives more reliable timing than counting days from your last period.

Some women notice EWCM appearing on more than one occasion per cycle. If you’re tracking and see what appears to be a second episode of EWCM later in the cycle, it’s worth continuing to test LH, a second rise in estrogen can occasionally produce mucus changes without a second ovulation occurring.

What happens to discharge after ovulation?

After ovulation, the ruptured follicle transforms into the corpus luteum and begins producing progesterone. Progesterone has the opposite effect on cervical mucus from estrogen: it thickens it, reduces its volume, and shifts the pH back to a more acidic environment that is hostile to sperm.
