When to begin testing
Your testing start day depends on your cycle length. A common approach is to subtract 17 from your average cycle length and begin testing on that day, for a 28-day cycle, that's around day 11.
- Test at the same time each day; late morning to early evening (10 AM–8 PM) works well
- Avoid your first morning urine, as LH is more detectable later in the day
- Limit fluids for about 2 hours before testing so your urine isn't diluted
- Testing twice a day during your expected fertile window can help you catch the surge

After your surge
Once you detect your LH surge, your most fertile days are typically the day of the surge and the following 1–2 days. This is the window many couples focus on when trying to conceive.
