Knowing Your Fertility Window Creates Unique Conception Opportunity

So you’ve been trying to conceive for a while. Or maybe you’re just getting started along your TTC journey, but you have no clue when the best time to do the baby dance is. There are a variety of factors that influence a woman’s chances of becoming pregnant, including age, lifestyle habits, hormonal imbalances, and certain medical conditions, to name a few, but knowing the best timing around your ovulation cycle will set you up for the greatest success on your TTC journey.

Know Thy Cycle - The easiest way to figure out when you’re most fertile is to know when you ovulate. If you’re just getting started on the road to conception, you might be wondering how to track your ovulation. Ovulation (when your egg is released from your ovaries) generally happens in the middle of your cycle, which is typically counted from the first day of your period through the day right before your next period will start. Once you determine how long your menstruation cycle is, it’s easier to pin-point when to begin tracking your ovulation. If you figure out that your cycle lasts 30 days on average, for example, your ovulation would typically happen around day 14 of your cycle.

Ovulation 101 -  Did you know that the window for ovulation to occur each month is only about 12-48 hours on average? Hence the reason why a lot of women struggle to conceive quickly, right?!?! This doesn’t mean that there is only one “good” day each month to try to conceive. Actually, you have 5-7 days each cycle where the chance of getting pregnant is very high. This is your most fertile time, a.k.a. your QUEUE TO INITIATE THE BABY DANCING. Let’s break it down:

  • You have a 30 day cycle.
  •  You start tracking your ovulation with an OPK ( the easy@home combo test strips kit is perfect for this task) around day 14 of your cycle.
  • Test for your LH surge each day (sometimes twice a day) for at least 5 days until you get a positive result. You’ll be able to clearly see the pattern when the test line shows up as dark or darker than the control line on the test. This indicates that your LH surge happens.
  • Once you see a positive result on the OPK test and pin-point your surge, this means that your ovulation should happen within the following 12-48 hours.
  • Now you’ll know it’s time to try to conceive.

Now that you have the whole picture on how to detect your ovulation, you can narrow down your optimal window of fertility. Once you feel confident that you’ve done the baby dance during your fertile days, you’ll be all set to begin testing for pregnancy with the HCG strips from the combo kit mentioned earlier. Generally, you’ll want to wait to take the pregnancy test(s) until 1 day of your missed period to give your body enough time to build up the HCG hormone in the body. HCG is low in the very early days of pregnancy, so it’s a good idea to test again in a couple of days after you think you may have a positive result. Trying to conceive is never stress-free, but knowing when your best chance of conception is makes it that much more enjoyable. Happy dancing!
