Pregnancy Week 7 - Week 8

Baby Growth

  • Size is approximately .63 inches .04 ounce.
  • Your baby is the size of a raspberry.
  • Your baby has web-like hand and feet stubs, and is also developing arms, legs, and kidneys. A small tail has developed, but it will quickly be gone.  The retinas and genitals are also beginning to form by week 8, and by the end of the two weeks all essential organs have developed.  Your baby’s face is also beginning to develop.

You & Your Body

  • Your mucus plug develops in the opening of your cervix to protect your womb from bacteria, and you may notice a thin, milky discharge that helps protect the birth canal from infection.
  • You may notice some breast development, as well as increased saliva, and possible morning sickness (nausea). Other symptoms may include bloating and constipation.
  • You may have gained a few pounds, but you probably aren’t showing yet.
  • Cramping can be normal at this time, but consult a doctor if you are simultaneously experiencing shoulder or neck pain or contractions, dizziness, or unusual discharge.

Tips

  • If you begin to experience food aversion -- go with it! Find substitutes for those foods you can no longer stand.  For example, substitute lentils or quinoa if you have an aversion to meat.
  • Prep your prenatal questions.
  • If you’re experiencing some pregnancy heartburn, try eating smaller amounts (nutritious foods!) throughout the day.
  • Maintaining your exercise routine, drinking lots of water, and eating foods rich in fiber will help keep you regular at this time. Some exercises to consider: walking for overall health, squats for muscle strengthening and stamina, yoga for flexibility.
  • If you notice dark spots begin to develop on your skin, protect yourself from the sun while outside.
